Orifices: ruby, sapphire and diamond
The orifice is the critical part that generates the high-pressure jet. Material choice directly impacts cost per hour, precision and maintenance cycle.

Abrasive garnet: mesh sizes and consumption
Almandine garnet is the standard abrasive for waterjet cutting. Lucohe delivers calibrated garnet in 25 kg bags and 1,000 kg big-bags with 48-72 h delivery in Iberia and 5-7 days in Balearics, Canary Islands, Madeira and Azores.

Waterjet spare parts FAQ
When should I replace the mixing tube on my OMAX waterjet? +
Replace the mixing tube when the internal diameter erodes more than 0.05-0.08 mm beyond the original spec (typically every 80-120 hours with 80 mesh garnet). Practical signs: the jet starts to spread (loses focus), kerf width exceeds 1 mm, or cut edges show more taper than usual. Always measure with a plug-gauge before discarding — many shops throw out tubes that still have life in them.
What is the difference between a ruby, sapphire and diamond orifice? +
Ruby: 40-80 h service life, low cost, great quality/price ratio for general cutting. Sapphire: 80-120 h, better jet geometry consistency. Diamond: 800-1,500 h, 15-20× higher upfront cost but the lowest cost per hour for 24/7 intensive production. OMAX standard diameters are 0.010-0.015 inches.
Should I use 80 mesh or 120 mesh garnet? +
80 mesh: most common (~80% of cuts). Balanced speed and surface finish. Typical consumption 0.45-0.68 kg/min depending on pump power. 120 mesh: fine, high-precision cuts with smoother edges (Ra 3-5 µm), but ~20% slower. For thick plate (>40 mm) or roughing, 80 mesh is more efficient.
How much garnet does a waterjet consume per year? +
Depends on effective cutting hours and pump power. Reference: a shop with 1,500 h/year and a 30 HP pump consumes ~15-18 tonnes/year (80 mesh). Intensive production 4,000 h/year with 50 HP: 45-55 tonnes/year. Lucohe ships garnet in 25 kg bags and 1,000 kg big-bags with 48-72 h delivery in Iberia.
Are Hypertherm Powermax consumables cross-compatible between models? +
Partially. Hypertherm splits consumables by series: Powermax45 XP uses different nozzle/electrode than Powermax65/85/105 (which share a family). Shields, deflectors and swirl rings are usually model-specific. When ordering, always specify exact model (Powermax45 XP, Powermax65 SYNC, etc.) and working amperage — optimum consumables vary between 30 A and 125 A.
Which high-pressure seals does an OMAX 60,000 psi pump need? +
OMAX EnduroMAX direct-drive pumps use a seal kit with one dynamic seal (hard seal) plus a secondary seal (soft seal) per cylinder. Typical life: 500-800 h with treated water (hardness <50 ppm, filtered to 0.5 µm). Late maintenance can damage the plunger (10× pricier than the seal kit), so preventive replacement at 500 h is recommended.
Can I use generic Chinese consumables on an OMAX machine? +
Technically yes, but not recommended. Original OMAX ROCTEC 100 mixing tubes hold ±0.005 mm internal diameter tolerance; generics run at ±0.03-0.05 mm, which degrades cut precision and doubles garnet consumption. Incorrect alloy also damages the mixing chamber by vibration. On cost-per-hour, originals usually win.
